A lot of training happens in the rainy season when the safari camps are less busy. It comes with challenges! This is what we were here to work around.
Selous Impala is one of the classic established camps in Selous (now Nyerere National Park), but recently refurbished and brought back to life. It was a perfect time to connect with the guiding team and work on old and new skills.

One key area was to focus on delivery of the boat experience. The perspectives and details are as important for the boatmen as the for the guides behind the wheel. We looked at the course of the entire Rufiji River and the life there is to share along its length.

We spent time on night drives and bush walks to look at how these experiences are different. What additional skills and how does communication differ in this context. Questions around what our guests are expecting from these activities played a key part in this.

In the green season the birding is always fantastic, so we delved into which are the special and endemic species of the East Coast of Africa. A good number were just in the camp!
Despite the challenging conditions, we celebrated the life of this park. In the fresh flowering woodland, the leopards passing close to camp, red velvet mites emerging from underground and the myriad of colourful birds – all interesting and exciting opportunities to share with our guests.
